Or admission to fourth-year Honours or the Postgraduate Diploma in Japanese for fourth-year students. |

Subject Description | This subject introduces advanced learners of Japanese to two interrelated, but different, areas of Japanese-English: interpreting and translation. It provides the students with opportunities to understand what knowledge and techniques are necessary for interpreting and translating from one language to another. It involves regular practice in class of interpreting and text translation in various settings and contexts. Students are also encouraged to explore the differences in the two language systems. They are required to understand the meaning of Japanese conversation and text in context in order to capture the meaning for English audience/readers. Students who complete this subject should have basic skills and techniques for Japanese-English interpreting and translation. They also should have obtained further insight into the structures, grammar, and discourse of Japanese and English. |
Assessment | Assignments totalling 2000 words for 3rd year, 3000 words for 4th year, and examinations totalling 2000 words. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to take the examinations. |
