Subject Description

This subject is for students who have satisfactorily completed 110-410 Arabic 4A or equivalent. It aims to further enhance students' proficiency by an in-depth linguistic survey of Arabic language styles through authentic reading in modern standard Arabic and understanding and application of grammatical and stylistic rules. Students read and analyse selections in modern standard Arabic such as short stories, newspaper articles and short dramas and poems. The analysis will be based on a study of selected grammatical and morphological phenomena of Arabic, based on reading from the modern study of linguistics in Arab world. Students will focus in their analysis on selected linguistic concepts, tracing their deferent manifestations in a given text. This subject will develop students' skills such as proficiency in written structures of sophisticated complexity and the capacity to understand and evaluate specialist and technical language use as well as better understanding of Arabic syntax. It will also cover a variety of issues in modern Arabic linguistics, the historical, cultural, economic and political factors that have conditioned the emergence of Arabic as an international language.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words.
