Subject Description

This subject involves a review of Jewish literature from the Enlightenment to the present, featuring a variety of authors, genres and texts. One of the themes of the subject is the exploration of the role of metaphor, biblical and modern, within Jewish literature, with particular attention to the sacrifice of Isaac and other biblical metaphors. Students will also explore issues of Jewish literary bilingualism, and the representation of women and of non-Jewish figures in Jewish literature. Students should complete the semester with an understanding of the development of modern Hebrew and Jewish literature.

Assessment

Written work totalling 4000 words, and class participation.
