Subject Description | This subject aims to provide two main contexts for a study of Shakespeare: first, the dramatic traditions and theatrical practices that produced Shakespeare as an Elizabethan dramatist; and second, the literary and cultural traditions that his work inaugurated in subsequent centuries and in different national and political formations. Students who successfully complete this subject should have a close understanding of selected plays by Shakespeare and of some literary rewritings of them. Students will also acquire a background of relevant knowledge and methodologies on which to base further studies in English and cultural studies. |
