Subject Description

The focus of this subject is the present reality of Spain in its cultural and linguistic diversity (including Galicia, Catalunya and the Basque region). The role of Spain in the modern world, the position of women in contemporary Spanish society and the historical background to the modern world (civil war, transition from dictatorship to democracy, the status of the autonomous regions) will be examined. In relation to these facets of Spain, a range of films, texts and visual material will be considered.

Assessment

A 500-word written exercise, a 1500-word essay, a 10-minute oral presentation, a 1.5-hour test and class participation. Third year students will be expected to show a greater achievement of discipline specific skills in their written work, and will give a longer presentation.
