Subject Description

This subject will introduce students to the literature and history of the early Christian Church and to exegetical method and procedure through the use of selected texts from the New Testament. Topics will be selected from the following areas: the canon of the New Testament, synoptic studies, source criticism and form criticism, redaction criticism, literary criticism, the historical and social world of the New Testament era. Students who complete this subject should be able to understand the processes which resulted in the writing of the New Testament and identify the sources and traditions behind the synoptic gospels; and use contemporary methods in exegeting New Testament texts.

Assessment

Two essays of 1000 words each or one essay of 2000 words and a 2-hour examination.
