Subject Description

On completion of this subject students will be able to demonstrate the ability to:

  • access information from a variety of computer-based sources;

  • use a spreadsheet database function to analyse data from an external source;

  • differentiate and evaluate methods of transferring information in computer based systems;

  • use and evaluate expert systems;

  • understand data types, data structures and relational database concepts; and

  • use a database program to convert data from a number of sources into meaningful management information.

The content includes the merging of information and communication technologies; internet; the use of a database and management system to analyse data which will not fit a flat file structure; using a geographic information system to carry out spacial analysis; future directions for IT.

Assessment

Three assignments (15%; 60%; 25%).
