Subject Description

This subject provides students with knowledge and practical experience in:

  • the role and significance of remnant vegetation in the rural Australian landscape;

  • the conservation and quality of remnant vegetation in Australia;

  • the impact of past and present management on the ecology of remnant vegetation;

  • the role of habitat corridors in the rural landscape; and

  • the socio-economic factors relating to the conservation and management of remnant vegetation.

The content includes the history, distribution and extent of remnant vegetation in Australia; the ecology of remnant vegetation, with reference to quality, influences and impacts; the conservation and management of threatened flora and fauna; the role of habitat corridors; past, present and future management strategies for remnant vegetation; perceptions and attitudes towards remnant vegetation in the rural landscape; and the influence of this on remnant vegetation management.

Assessment

Three assignments of 5000, 3000 and 2000 words (50%, 30% and 20% respectively).
