Subject Description | This subject focuses on the application of 'realist' acting theory to the building of a performance. It examines the theories underpinning 'realist' acting, and their application to a number of key plays (including Ibsen and Chekhov). Particular attention is given to the new theatre initiated by Ibsen and others, and the acting techniques developed by Stanislavski and Strasberg. Consideration is also given to the historical and cultural context in which these theories developed, parallel developments in related cultural fields, and their continuing impact on actor training and performance techniques in contemporary theatre practice. |
Assessment | Written work equivalent to 4000 words, consisting of an essay totalling 2000 words, performance work, and documentation of and participation in practical workshops. Minimum 80% attendance (hurdle requirement). |
