Subject Description | On completion of this subject students should have an understanding of theories of culture contact and musical change and their application to a variety of forms of migrant music-making in Australia; have a critical grasp of the current terminologies and government policies associated with multiculturalism and music in Australia as a result of changing immigration policy; have a working knowledge of the ethnomusicological literature concerning the issues of urbanisation, Westernisation, modernisation, appropriation, commercialisation and institutionalisation as they apply to the music of migrants in Australia; have an understanding of the mechanisms for the dissemination and the modes of reception of migrant music in Australia. |
Assessment | Participation in seminars (10%); brief report (10%); dossier (5%); investigative project or essay (75%). |
