Subject Description

Students will gain knowledge of the historical development of the practice of music therapy; a knowledge of the theoretical approaches in using music as a therapeutic medium with children; a comprehensive knowledge of research findings in relation to music therapy methods for children; an understanding of the therapeutic processes in providing treatment and special education services.

Topics covered include principles and processes of music therapy; historical development of the profession; theoretical basis of the use of music in therapy; the application of music therapy methods in special education and clinical treatment programs; and study of research literature.

Assessment

One 1500-word assignment (30%); one 3-hour examination, (70%).
