Subject Description

This subject covers the detailed anatomy and histology of the eye, orbit and visual pathways. Upon completion of this subject students should comprehend the terminology of histology and cytology; be able to identify and interpret the light and electron microscopic appearance of cells and tissues; the histology of the eye, orbit and visual pathways; the embryological development of the eye; and the neuroanatomy of the visual pathways. A series of lectures will give an introduction to histology and will be supplemented by practical work on examination of histological preparations. A further series of lectures will be given on the histology and detailed anatomy of the eye, orbit and visual pathways with associated practical classes.

Assessment

A 2-hour written examination at the end of semester (80%) and assessment of practical work (20%).
