Subject Description | This subject consists of three units of study: thinking and learning (100 hours), academic communication (100 hours) and information technology (30 hours). This subject will include further intensive IELTS preparation. Thinking and learning aims to develop sound thinking and study skills relevant to the Australian university environment. It incorporates development of critical and analytical thinking, problem-solving, recording and organising information, using resources and working collaboratively. Academic communication develops students' reading, writing, speaking, listening and cultural skills required to participate in an academic environment. Learning tasks gradually lead students to carrying out assignments at a level of complexity required for undergraduate courses. Information technology will continue to develop the use of information technology. Students will use advanced word processing packages that will enable them to carry out written assignments. Students will be introduced to graphics packages (including Powerpoint or similar) and spreadsheets. |
Assessment | An essay (1000 words) and written reports on topics appropriate to science (50%), oral presentations on scientific topics (20%), classroom participation and class tests (20%), other brief reports (10%). |
