This subject consists of two strands that will develop linkages with teaching and professional practice and build on the understandings developed in Teaching, Learning and Play. Strand 1 will focus on best practice for infants and toddlers and the provision of high quality care and education. Key areas for developmentally appropriate practice for children 0-3 years will be studied including adult child interactions and the development of attachments, care-giving routines, the provision of appropriate learning experiences, the role of the environment, and relationships with parents. Strand 2 will examine the strategies of early years curriculum (5-8) in primary schools covering the educational priorities, goals, documentation and assessment for effective learning. The conceptual and methodological bases of teaching strategies such as inquiry and concept learning and cooperative learning will be addressed. Students will explore teaching techniques, resources and skills - including communication skills such as questioning and behaviour management and classroom discipline from a developmental perspective- that enhance students willingness and ability to learn successfully.
