Subject Description

This subject covers:

  • the nature of matter;

  • chemical symbols, valency and the periodic table;

  • plant nutrients and their relationship to pH;

  • principles and units of measurement and energy balances; and

  • taxonomic approaches to plant description, plant anatomy and morphology (roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits).

Assessment

Two 2-hour written examinations worth 60% of final marks, two written assignments (20%) and practical reports worth 20% of final marks.
