175-025 Introduction to Japanese Linguistics

Completion of 175-004 Introduction to Language or 175-005 English: Its Structure and History or 37.5 points of first year Japanese language study or departmental approval.

This subject is an introduction to the structure and history of the Japanese language. Aspects of Japanese pronunciation and grammatical structure are discussed from a typological perspective. Students who complete the subject should have acquired a knowledge of Japanese phonology, morphology and syntax from a typological perspective; and have some knowledge of Japanese dialects, the history of Japanese language and the relationship between Japanese and other languages.
