166-010 Indigenous People and the State

This subject provides a contemporary overview of the social and political situations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia and how these situations are influenced by indigenous and non-indigenous relations. A major focus will be on the current federal government policy of self-determination and whether this policy advances, impedes or assimilates the aspirations of indigenous Australians in the areas of health, education, landrights, land justice and cultural heritage. On completion of this subject students should demonstrate a general grasp of the history of indigenous/non-indigenous relations in Australia and a basic knowledge of the diversity of indigenous cultures in Australia. Students should also have an awareness of the major issues which currently confront indigenous societies in Australia.
