Subject Description | This subject is a study of the importance of the court in medieval Europe in the Middle Ages, both as a socio-political institution and as a cultural construct. The study is based on contemporary writings, both administrative and creative. Topics include courts and rulers; courts and the Church; the courtly ideal; propaganda and subversion; women and the court; and regional variation. On completion of the subject students should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the origins, influences and ideologies which kept the court at the centre of social, political and intellectual life in the high Middle Ages. |
Assessment | Written work totalling 5000 words for 4th year, 5000 words and a class paper for masters students. |
