Subject Description

This subject is a study of the importance of the court in medieval Europe in the Middle Ages, both as a socio-political institution and as a cultural construct. The study is based on contemporary writings, both administrative and creative. Topics include courts and rulers; courts and the Church; the courtly ideal; propaganda and subversion; women and the court; and regional variation. On completion of the subject students should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of the origins, influences and ideologies which kept the court at the centre of social, political and intellectual life in the high Middle Ages.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words for 4th year, 5000 words and a class paper for masters students.
