Formerly available as 131-098. Students who have completed 131-098 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. This subject is compulsory for pure honours students and optional for students taking combined honours with a thesis in history. It is not available to students writing a thesis in another discipline.

Subject Description

This subject involves a study of theoretical or historiographical issues broadly related to the thesis topic and conducted through extensive reading, decided by the student in conjunction with the supervisor. The subject should enhance the student's powers of independent inquiry, should encourage initiative in self-directed research, and should strengthen the student's capacities in theoretical analysis and argument.

Assessment

Written work totalling 5000 words for 4th year, 5000 words and an annotated bibliography for masters students.
