This subject is a study of Australians' experiences of war, both as combatants and civilians since the end of the Great War of 1914-1918. Topics will include the aftermath of the Great War, World War II, the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam, and Australian peacekeeping operations. Students who complete the subject should have an understanding of issues such as battle and home-front experiences and their interaction, the growth and nature of an Australian war tradition, the long-term impact of war upon social relations, notions of national identity, ideas of Australia's place in the world, the course of the Anzac legend, and critical responses to the Anzac legend in the context of Australian traditions of myth-making and dissent.
