Subject Description | This subject examines the major changes which took place in western Europe between 300 AD and 1066 AD, through analysis of contemporary documents and secondary sources such as the writings of modern historians. We focus on the life of ordinary people, clerics and nobles, the blending of Roman and regional institutions which form the background of Early Modern Europe, and the nature and importance of early medieval institutions. Through tutorials, lectures and readings students should learn to argue productively and to ask questions of the historical data. One of the aims of this subject is to allow students to not just learn history, but learn to write it themselves. |
Assessment | Class participation and written work totalling 4000 words. |
