126-469 Post-Holocaust Literature

37.5 points of second/third year subjects. European studies students wishing to enrol in this subject would normally have completed 37.5 points of European studies at second/third year, see Prerequisites.

This subject analyses contemporary German prose and poetry springing from the immediacy of the Holocaust. Attention will also be given to the East German poet, Johannes Bobrowski, especially in the light of the significance of the Baltic intellectual tradition in his writings. Bobrowski's role will be highlighted as an example of the quest for peace and reconciliation, following the wartime apocalypse. On completion of the subject students should have acquired a detailed knowledge of a number of texts, a knowledge of both major and minor postwar German writers, and should have reached a good standard of analysis and critical evaluation.

A 1000 word class paper and an essay of 3000 words for 3rd year, a 1000 word class paper and a 4000 word essay for 4th year.
