110-455 Japanese 4B: Language and Culture

Formerly available as 110-136. Students who have completed 110-136 are not eligible to enrol in this subject. This subject is optional for Japanese 4B students. However, it is strongly recommended for those who intend to take Japanese 5A/5B in the following year.

Subject Description

This subject is aimed at the understanding of culture-specific expressions and phenomena that require factual/historical background knowledge. Topics have been selected carefully to provide students with an adequate frame of reference in order to discuss current issues in Japan via cross-cultural analysis.

Assessment

Assignments and quizzes totalling 2000 words, a 1-hour examination, and a 20-minute oral project work presentation. An additional translation exercise totalling 1000 words for fourth year. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to take examinations.
