Subject Description | This subject is a study of Malay, its linguistic development and the processes of its standardisation into Indonesian and Malay(sian). Selected texts will be used to illustrate the socio-historical, ethnic and regional variation of Malay. Students who complete the subject should have a general knowledge of the historical development of Malay; be able to recognise different forms of Malay and to translate short passages of non-standard forms of Malay in English; and understand the politics of language standardisation with particular reference to Malay and Indonesian. |
Assessment | Written work totalling 4000 words for 3rd year, 5000 words for 4th year and masters students. |
Prescribed Texts | Selected texts in various forms of Malay will be supplied by the institute. |
