Subject Description

This is a third year level in-country language subject, to be held at a university in Beijing in Semester 1. The subject provides an in-country alternative to third year language study in Chinese for well-qualified students. Both in terms of total contact hours and language learning, this subject is the equivalent of a full year on campus at Melbourne, and a pass in this subject will qualify students for entry to appropriate fourth year language subjects. Subject components will cover all aspects of third year language work, including listening comprehension, advanced oral work, composition, and readings in modern and pre-modern Chinese. Assessment will be conducted in part by host university staff (continuous assessment) and by staff of the Chinese program after students return.

Assessment

Four 1-hour examinations, a 30-minute listening comprehension test, a 20-minute oral test (conducted in Melbourne); and assignments and/or tests totalling 5000 words, and class participation (conducted in Beijing).
