110-119 Diversity in the Indonesian Archipelago

This subject will introduce students to the diverse societies of the Indonesian archipelago, and will cover the cultural traditions of major ethnic groups, such as Batak, Minangkabau, Javanese and Balinese, as well as a number of smaller or marginalised groups in Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Papua, and the numerous eastern islands. Interactions between these groups and with outside populations from mainland Asia and Europe will be discussed. A historical overview on diversity in Indonesia, from pre-colonial times, through colonisation and independence, to the present time, including the rise of urban areas, will give students a strong foundation for further study of current Indonesian social issues.

Written work totalling 3000 words and a 1-hour examination.
