Normally, students enrolling as part of a cultural studies major or as an elective credit must enrol in the non-language stream. Students who wish to take the class as part of a Japanese major must enrol in the language stream. Native speakers must enrol in the language stream whether they are taking the class as an elective or part of a major. |

Subject Description | This subject aims to analyse the relationship between popular cultural phenomena and society in general, including a discussion of popular culture as both a product and a determinant of national and gender identity. This subject introduces students of Japanese language to the academic approaches taken when looking at popular culture. Students of cultural studies will apply thier knowledge to an examination of one of the world's most vibrant cultural industries. |
Assessment | Written work totalling 2000 words, a 2-hour written exam and class participation. Students are required to attend a minimum of 70% of all classes in order to be eligible to submit the final essay. |
