Subject Description | The study of the classical languages has already been considerably transformed by the application of various modern technologies. In particular, the ready availability of extensive databases of Ancient Greek and Latin is having a significant impact on these disciplines. This subject begins by reviewing the emergence of these phenomena and discusses why they have found such relevance in the study of classical languages. Students proceed to a detailed linguistic evaluation of the contribution made by these methods, including methodological and theoretical issues. A major component of the subject is a introduction to computer project design, including an orientation to Java as a web programming language. Students should derive some experience in developing web applications using databases and closely integrated web-serving software they write for themselves. |
