Subject Description | This subject involves the specialised reading and analysis of a Latin prose text or texts from the late 1st to early 2nd century AD (the Neronian, Flavian and Trajanic periods). Selecting from among the works of Tacitus, Quintilian, Pliny (Elder and Younger), Suetonius and Seneca, this subject will focus on areas such as style and genre; the text's relationship to ancient historiographical, rhetorical or philosophical traditions; and the place of such literature within elite culture at this period. Students should complete the subject with critical techniques in the reading, analysis, translation and interpretation of Latin prose texts. |
