Subject Description

This subject involves a history of archaeology from the 18th to the 20th century. The subject shows how archaeology developed from its beginnings in Renaissance antiquarianism to assume a major role with the growth of Empire. Students should complete the subject with a grasp of the major turning points in the history of archaeology, the introduction of new techniques and the importance of scientific analysis in 20th century archaeology; and of the contribution of major figures such as Petrie, Schliemann, Woolley and Evans.
