The Centre for Classics and Archaeology offers a full stream of study in the ancient languages Latin and Ancient Greek, see Ancient Greek. Proficiency in both of these languages at the earliest possible stage is highly recommended for those wishing to specialise in the study of the ancient Greco-Roman world. The ancient languages therefore are a fundamental part of the major and the honours program in classics and archaeology, see Classics and archaeology. Both languages are available as streamed programs of study that can be commenced from first/second year. These can commence either at beginners level or the post-VCE stream. The centre also offers a Diploma of Arts (Ancient Languages), see Diploma of Arts (Ancient Languages).

3. Career opportunities

Prospective employers of arts graduates are often aware of the benefits deriving from rigorous study of the ancient world and its texts and intellectual traditions. This means that the studies offered by the centre are of general relevance. There are also specific opportunities, especially in Latin, in the field of secondary education.
