Subject Description

Women writers have come to the fore in Spain in the 20th century, particularly since the Civil War period. This subject is a general introduction to the works of some of these writers and an examination of their place in Spanish literature and society. This will be followed by a more detailed study of some specific works. Attention will be paid to the major literary trends and developments in 20th century Spain, and the important role of women writers within those trends and developments. The status of women in Spanish society (pre- and post-Civil War) and the reflection of that status (and of Spanish society in general) in Spanish women's writing will be examined, together with the impact of Spanish feminism and feminist literary theory on Spanish women's writing.

Assessment

An essay of 2000 words for third year, 3000 words for fourth year, a 1000 word written assignment, a 15-minute oral presentation and class participation for third year.
