Subject Description

The objective of these subjects is to extend participant's ability to:

  • state the features of significance to the Australian economy and natural resource base of agriculture;

  • list major innovations in agriculture, and the role of agricultural technology in the further development of the industry;

  • prepare a business plan for the implementation of innovations into farming or related industry; and

  • use basic statistical techniques to help design small field trials to assess the local impact of new technology.

The content includes the state of the farming industries; industry trends and developments; industry indicators and trends; the need for innovation in farming; innovators and innovations; criteria for successful innovation; rural development case study; climate and agricultural opportunities; factors affecting new industries; interpreting and applying technical information; components of a business plan; business plan for case study; statistics and experimentation including mean, standard deviations, t-test, field trial design.

Assessment

One 250 word report (10%); one 500 word report (20%), one 1500 plan (35%); 2-hour examination (35%)
