Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to enable the student to:

  • perform basic functions within a GIS environment;

  • become familiar with different GIS;

  • review the usage of GIS in industry/government organisations;

  • develop project proposals that will implement GIS functionally; and

  • evaluate the limitations of GIS.

The content of this subject will cover the following areas: introducing GIS, maps and map analysis, textual database management, date input, verification and output, spatial objects and relationships, GIS methods, Vector GIS and Raster GIS, system review and digital elevation models.

Assessment

Examination (30%); practical tasks (30%); two assignments (40%).
