Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to develop the students' ability to:

  • apply engineering and scientific principles to the practice of farming;

  • plan engineering projects for 'on-farm' application;

  • and explain the operation of modern equipment used in agriculture.

The content includes:

  • strength of materials:

  • mechanical properties of materials, stress, strain, elasticity, testing procedures, safety factor;

  • principles of traction: tractor power trains, traction and performance, tractor drawbar performance, tractor stability;

  • agricultural machinery: principles of tillage, metering mechanisms, chemical applicators and calibration, cutting mechanisms, harvesters, machinery matching and management;

  • surveying: horizontal and vertical measurement, maps;

  • and ergonomics: the environment for human work activity, health and safety in the workplace.

Assessment

Two 2-hour examinations (40% and 60%).
