Subject Description

The objective of this subject is to enable students to:

  • understand the range of production alternatives in the Australian beef industry and the factors which influence these alternatives;

  • apply their understanding of the factors which underline the management of beef enterprises to practical situations; and

  • analyse and evaluate biological, industry, marketing and physical production functions as factors affecting management decisions.

The content includes beef cattle physiology, production alternatives within the Australian industry, management strategies for beef production, alternative breeding plans and beef improvement programs, livestock marketing, meat processing and marketing, as well as recent trends in the beef industry; current research data, its interpretation and application to management programs, is used extensively in the subject as a basic resource.

Assessment

Assignment of 2000 words (20%); 1.5-hour examination (30%); 2-hour examination (40%); two exercises (5% each).
