A 1-hour aural class and a 1-hour keyboard class per week

Subject Description

Students will consolidate and extend their aural, transcription, sight-singing and keyboard skills, including:

  • interval recognition over two octaves;

  • chord recognition including triads and seventh chords presented in inversion and open voicings; chord progressions in major and minor keys including chords built on all scale degrees in root position andinversion with modulations;

  • transcription of more complex one and two part melodies in major and minor keys with modulations;

  • transcription of rhythms: simple, compound and odd metres;

  • sight-singing of diatonic melodies and the sight performance of rhythms (clapping, singing/conducting) in simple, compound, odd and mixed metres;

Rhythm studies will include the analysis and performance of polyrhythms in ratios 5:2 and 5:3. Keyboard studies will extend skills that can be used to assist in aural skill acquisition and to provide the basis for simple accompaniment skills.

Assessment

Individual sight-singing and rhythm performance (40%); 1-hour aural comprehension examination (40%); keyboard examination (20%).
