Faculty Musicianship Test or 740-139 Introduction to Music 1-2. For international students a score of 6.5 on IELTS or a pass in AESL1.

Subject Description

Students will be able to stylistically identify and describe musical scores from many periods and traditions, to undertake basic scholarly work using the bibliographic tools of music, and to discuss in overview the music of several cultures.

Topics covered include an overview of musical works and ideas in the West up to 1750 and an introduction to the music cultures beyond; and critical and research methods basic to the scholarly study of music. Representative works of the major periods are introduced in their social contexts.

Assessment

Regular listening tests (20%); written projects to a total of 2000 words (20%);end-of-semester 3-hour examination (60%).
