A 1 -our aural class and a 1-hour keyboard class per week

Subject Description

Students will develop aural, transcription, sight-singing and keyboard skills, including:

  • recognition by ear intervals up to the octave, triads and seventh chords of the major and minor scales using appropriate symbols and nomenclature;

  • recognition and naming of I, IV and V chords (root position and inversions) in progressions in major and minor keys;

  • transcription of one and two part melodies in major and minor keys and transcription of rhythms in simple and compound metres;

  • sight-singing of diatonic melodies and the sight performance of rhythms (clapping, singing/conducting) in simple and compound metres; and

  • analysis and performance of polyrhythms in ratios 2:3 and 4:3.

Keyboard studies will include developmental studies and repertoire to establish skills that can be used to assist in aural skilll acquisition and to provide the basis for simple accompaniment skills.

Assessment

Individual sight-singing and rhythm performance tests (40%); 1-hour aural comprehension examination (40%); keyboard examination (20%).

Students must pass all assessment components to pass the subject.
