Subject Description | An introductory study of music of the western tradition to c.1800, predominantly as music appreciation but also with an emphasis on skill development in score reading, analysis, aural preception, and the fundamentals of melodic, contrapuntal and harmonic organisation of sound. By the end of the semester students should be able to discuss the principal movements in western musical history to 1800 and their characteristics, as well as being able to read, notate, and recognise aurally simple melodies, basic chords and progressions. |
Assessment | Four essays and regular tests in listening and writing equivalent to 4000 words. |
