Subject Description

This subject analyses the interplay between private sector developers and public sector planners for the provision of shopping and retailing opportunities. It covers the theory, practice and techniques for the planning of shopping facilities: USA, UK and Australia comparison. Appropriate survey and analytical techniques are introduced. Noteworthy topics include: theories and practices of retail distribution; planning for retailing: planning processes; Market analysis: forecasting demand for goods and services; the ABS household expenditure survey; introduction to psychographic segmentation; translation of consumer demand into floorspace need and provision; trends in shopping and shopping facilities; government policies on retailing and shopping centres; microeconomic order in shopping districts & shopping centres; planning and development of corporate shopping centres; revitalisation of traditional shopping streets.

Assessment

One 2-hour examination, a maximum of two tutorial papers and a planning project equivalent to not more than 4000 words.
