Subject Description

The use of GIS to analyse spatial data. Its aim is to improve urban and regional planning and the management of resources and services. Industry-standard GIS software is used throughout, along with local, real-world data sets. Spatial analysis and urban modelling techniques are also employed to seek insights into both parcels-based and network-based information systems. Such work is integrated with remote sensing and artificial intelligence techniques to provide students with leading edge, market-relevant skills. Finally, the concept of an advanced, integrated GIS that acts as a decision support tool for environmental planning is discussed.

Assessment

One project of 3000 words (40%) plus a 2-hour examination (60%). As part of the preparation for these two tasks, students need to satisfactorily attempt eight small laboratory assignments.
