Contact

Five hours of lectures and studio work a week. Approximately 50% of the contact hours are for project work designed to develop appropriate analytical, design and graphic communication skills. Attendance at two one-day excursions at times to be stated at the start of the semester

Subject Description

The scale of the urban fabric under investigation is expanded in this studio-based subject, to incorporate a whole neighbourhood and a set of inter-related open spaces, exploring their potential social and environmental contribution at a strategic level. The student is exposed to further aspects of the design process, including the design development of one of the sites already targeted at a strategic level. User and behavioural studies and aspects of community-based involvement are introduced and integrated with the design process and there is a more comprehensive investigation of the symbolic dimension of spatial design in the public realm.

Assessment

Progressive assessment of project and written work, equivalent of not more than 5000 words.
