Subject Description

An analysis of the socio-technical factors contributing, either by plan or by default, to the design of the built environment. At the conclusion of the subject students should be able to identify and engage with the various types of environmental conditions which are likely to affect the role of the design professions, the configuration of the building industry and the nature of its products in any given region. The final assignment requires students to demonstrate a critical understanding of the relationship between design practice, cultural values, spatial needs and industrial frameworks.

Assessment

Class participation (50%). Assignments (reports and essays) to the equivalent of not more than 7,500 words (50%)
