Subject Description

Topics include the development and planning of settlements in Australia; the colonial architecture of New South Wales and Tasmania; land and building regulations, urban conditions, building techniques; the development of architecture in Melbourne from its founding to recent times and the emergence of modern architecture. Special emphasis will be placed on the Melbourne environment. Students will develop skills in the understanding and analysis of buildings and places in terms of their context, form, planning, spatial effects, construction, function and social role; and skills in information-gathering and critical synthesis, essay and report-writing, and visual and oral presentation techniques required for the independent interpretation of these insights.

Assessment

An essay, class papers, and exercises (drawn and/or written), and a visual test, to the equivalent of not more than 5000 words, and one 90-minute examination (which may take the form of a class test).
