Five hours of lectures, tutorials, studio and laboratory work, and site visits per week

Subject Description

Structures: Design of elements and of determinate structures and an introduction to indeterminate structural analysis; deflections; structural design and the role of the consultant engineer; the application of structural design codes including loading codes. Soil Mechanics: The characteristics and physical properties of rocks and soils and their influence on the design of building footings and building behaviour.

Assessment

Assignments (e.g. exercises, essays, class presentation) equivalent to not more than 5000 words and one examination up to two hours (which could take the form of a class test). Exercises may relate to work being undertaken in other subjects.
