Any level-one fine arts/architectural history subject offered by the Faculty of Arts or the Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning (or permission of the head of department).

Subject Description

The course will consider the history of East Asian architecture as a whole within a systematic treatment of architectural design and construction, building science and technology, garden design and city planning that make up East Asian architecture's past and present. The course lays stress equally on architecture, garden, planning with an emphasis on details. Students will develop an understanding of the tangible and intangible architectural heritage of Chinese, Korean and Japanese architecture. Students will also develop skills in information-gathering and critical analysis, essay and report-writing, visual and oral presentation techniques for the independent interpretation of buildings, gardens and places in terms of context, form, scale, technique, function and planning.

Assessment

An essay, major study (building model or CAD drawing) and class paper to the equivalent of not more than 7500 words.
