Note | This subject is run jointly by the Faculty and CCS&ESL. It is only available to BPD Architecture students who have sat the Diagnostic English Language Assessment and have been shown to need support. With the approval of the Dean, the subject may be taken in place of history elective 1 in BPD Architecture. A history elective must be taken in BPD Architecture Year 3. |

Subject Description | This subject is an introduction to the language forms and communication styles that characterise the discipline of architecture. It teaches two specific sets of strategies and skills: 1. to engage with, critically assess and communicate ideas in the discipline: 2. to efficiently access information in lectures, tutorials, studios, libraries and through the internet. These strategies and skills will be developed through introductory studies in the fields of architectural history/theory, architectural design and construction technology. On completion of this subject students should have gained: 1. enhanced skills in academic writing in the fields of architectural history/theory, design and construction technology, eg essays and technical reports; 2. enhanced skills in oral presentations and group discussions studio and tutorial contexts; 3. strategies for listening, comprehension and notetaking in lectures in the BPD and BArch courses - including the linking of material presented in graphical and verbal forms. |
Assessment | Assessment will be based on written assignments, formal speaking, listening and comprehension tasks, and tutorial presentations to the equivalent of 7500 words. |
