Subject Description

Information systems are used extensively in organisations for supporting managerial work. Several levels of management are supported by a variety of tools including decision support systems (DSS), expert systems (ES), executive information systems (EIS), and management information systems (MIS). Aspects of the following topics will be considered: managerial work, decision making approaches, decision quality, systems for managerial work (MIS, DSS, EIS, ES), group support, data warehousing, and data mining.

At the completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • understand and evaluate how managers work;

  • understand and evaluate how decisions are made; and

  • understand and evaluate the types of information systems designed for managerial work.

Assessment

A 2-hour end-of-semester exam and assigned project work expected to average up to 8 hours per week. Weighting of the assessment components will be announced at the commencement of the subject.
