Subject Description

This subject emphasises the importance of integration of theoretical knowledge with appropriate clinical decisions and actions; the requirement for comprehensive treatment plans for physiotherapy; and principles of professional and effective communication with patients and professional colleagues.

Students must have an awareness of indications and contraindications and the ability to select and perform techniques in a safe effective manner; and be able to evaluate treatment effectiveness and to modify treatment as necessary. They must be able to provide appropriate patient education and plans for future treatment; and participate in team management and have effective written and verbal communication. Students should appreciate the role of the physiotherapist in multi disciplinary clinical settings. They should have a knowledge of the importance of understanding relevant pathophysiology to enable safe and effective patient management and the effects of other factors in patient management such as social, family, occupational and pharmacological issues. As well they need to apply critical and innovative thought in the clinical practice of physiotherapy and appreciate the importance of continuing self learning and development. This subject is a culmination of all the clinical components of physiotherapy with emphasis on the consolidation of management and clinical problem solving skills.
